Private Cage

Private Cage

What is a Private Cage?

A private cage in a data centre is a secure, physically separated space within the colocation facility that is dedicated solely to a single customer’s equipment. Unlike shared colocation spaces where multiple customers’ servers are housed in the same area, a private cage is typically surrounded by physical barriers such as metal mesh or solid walls, ensuring that only authorized personnel have access to the equipment inside.

Private cages offer an additional layer of security and privacy, allowing businesses to house their servers, storage devices, and networking equipment in an environment that is isolated from other tenants in the data centre.

What is the difference between a Private Cage and normal Colocation?

Private Cage:

Exclusive space: A private cage provides a dedicated, secure area within the data centre that is reserved exclusively for one customer’s equipment.
Enhanced security: The physical barriers and controlled access points of a private cage offer higher security, making it ideal for businesses with strict security or compliance requirements.
Customization: Customers have more control over the layout and configuration of their equipment within the cage, including the ability to implement custom cooling solutions, power configurations, and cable management.
Scalability: A private cage can be easily expanded or reconfigured as the business grows, offering flexibility in terms of space and infrastructure.
Privacy: The dedicated space ensures that the equipment is isolated from other customers’ hardware, providing greater privacy and reducing the risk of unauthorized access.

Normal Colocation:

Shared space: In normal colocation, customers share space within a larger area of the data centre. Servers and equipment from different customers are often housed in adjacent racks, separated only by individual cabinets.
Standard security: While data centres generally offer robust security measures, such as surveillance cameras and access control systems, equipment in a shared colocation space does not have the same level of physical isolation as in a private cage.
Limited customisation: In a shared colocation environment, customers have less flexibility in customising the physical setup, cooling solutions, and power configurations, as these are typically standardised by the provider.
Cost-effective: Shared colocation is usually more cost-effective than a private cage, making it a popular choice for businesses with fewer security or privacy concerns.

How would I know if a Private Cage is right for my business?

Determining whether a private cage is the right choice for your business involves evaluating your specific needs, including security requirements, compliance obligations, and growth potential. Here are some key factors to consider:

Security requirements:

If your business handles sensitive data, such as financial information, healthcare records, or proprietary technology, a private cage may be necessary to ensure compliance with industry regulations (e.g., PCI-DSS, HIPAA). Enhanced physical security, such as restricted access and surveillance, can help mitigate the risk of unauthorized access to your critical infrastructure.

Compliance obligations:

Certain industries require strict compliance with regulations that mandate data privacy and protection. A private cage can help meet these requirements by providing a controlled and isolated environment for your equipment.

Customisation needs:

If your business requires specific power configurations, cooling solutions, or rack layouts that are not supported in a shared colocation space, a private cage allows for greater customization and control over your infrastructure.

Scalability and future growth:

A private cage offers flexibility in terms of space and infrastructure, making it easier to scale your operations as your business grows. If you anticipate significant expansion or need the ability to quickly add more servers or equipment, a private cage might be a better option.

Budget considerations:

While a private cage offers many benefits, it comes at a higher cost compared to shared colocation. Assess your budget and weigh the importance of the added security, privacy, and customization against the additional expense.

Operational control:

Businesses that require tight operational control over their infrastructure, including the ability to implement custom monitoring, management, and maintenance procedures, may benefit from the autonomy provided by a private cage.

Privacy concerns:

If data privacy is a top priority, a private cage ensures that your equipment is isolated from other customers, reducing the risk of inadvertent data leaks or security breaches.
